peta

goes overboard most of the time. I get the message, but through a very crude funnel.
I have a love/hate relationship with those milk scenes.

missing the point

this definitely got my attention, but it seems like shock value for no good reason. the message gets lost in the imagery, so you're left feeling gross about what you saw (and maybe annoyed at PETA) -- but not horrified about milk itself.

Got a Message?

Yes it got my attention, but what was the point? I don't think that was very well thought through.

trend

As evident from the "big picture," it appears that the reviewers either find ads both heavenly and brilliant or cruddy and unethical. Is there no middle ground?! THINK!

umm

that was just plain nasty...

that got my attn.

that was so nasty

Shocking? Check. Pointless? Yup.

So let me see if I follow the logic… Cows are supposed to be like drunk college girls? They're just dumb enough to be cajoled into flashing? And they're somehow tricked into thinking it's not exploitation but all part of being FREE and WILD? Oh, and, uh, don't drink milk. I'm fairly liberal but PETA makes me feel like a bitter old Neo-Con.

After a month...

And I still don’t get it, but I know I will never give a penny to PETA, but I bought the entire collection of "Girls Gone Wild spring break Cancun tequila shots".

what the fuck

Seriously. Must we ALWAYS trade on women's bodies to sell our ideas.
And p.s., no one has any idea what their meddage is, so it's incredibly useless.

one word

unneccessary.

Convoluted at best..

I understand the point of this ad, but it's definitely hidden in the murk of extremism.

A simple ad stating the lack of health benefits of drinking milk(and the fact that humans are inherently lactose intolerant to some extent) would've been more poignant and detrimental to the milk industry than this crap. However, we all must remember: PETA isn't about education; it's about shock. This is why they are never attractive to logical humans. They would rather be brash and counterproductive than reasonable.

so its gross, but worth banning?

not sure what reasons in the end that they did not allow this to run: for the fake cow-boobs? for the message? for the advertiser? I'd be curious as to what that was.

confused consumer

I'm not an ad pro, but I'd say this commercial is just terrible.
I actually thought it was a PRO-milk commercial (like, from the dairy council or something) until I saw the PETA logo at the end.
NOT effective. And yeah, gross.

ggw and milk?

why would you mix the two. its kind of disturbing actually. girls gone wild and milk.... i just dont like it. if they are going for keeping a picture in someone's head well they have succeeded; but it doesnt make me want to research it further

Strange

I think the message is really lost in this ad. I know where milk comes from, I know how sick it can be. But I don't relate Girls Gone Wild Ads with their statment. Really lost, and really poorly executed.

oh peta

i swear i'm your target. yeah, i love meat, i'm not gonna lie, but i might be convinced with some strong, rational arguments because i am a thoughtful, intellectually motivated girl.

oh but you insist on using disgust and guilt as your primary motivators. i guess if you want to continue feeling superior to the rest of us, GREAT WORK PETA, keep it up!

superbowl (oops)

And i just read the caption on the front page. Seems I heard correctly, heh.

superbowl

I heard somewhere that this was intended for the superbowl but then got (obviously) rejected

Did someone say zoophile?

Beyond words!!! And 4 me it’s a rare occasion. This is the worst one as of yet!

what's going on?

reminds me of why south park made that episode on peta's marriage to animals.

Posted by: samneang on October 9th, 2006.

wow

that's just scary

Posted by: cancerstheproof on October 5th, 2006.

Peta is from Mars, Animal lovers are from Venus

Peta's approach alienates what could be part of their audience, MOR animal lovers.

Posted by: lolabetabel on October 5th, 2006.

ummm . . .

ok, so I'm disgusted.

Posted by: forsoreeyesonly on October 4th, 2006.

What were they thinking?

I have no idea what this advertisement is attempting to communicate; and it's sufficiently nasty to prevent me from further investigation. Badly done PETA.

Posted by: christineann.vargas on October 3rd, 2006.

this commercial "sucks" (get it "h")

PETA is not a moderate organization. they are by no means in the "middle". it wouldn't make sense if they made those kinds of spots. they are punks, their membership are punks, so I believe the creatives acted accordingly.

what if their brief was as simple as "energize and pump up the core?" to piss off and anger them enough to join our organization

than i think they used a good, entertaining and understandable metaphor to parallel the often "me first" human treatment of animals, one of the very things that pisses their target off.

Why do we drink cow's milk?

PETA is forcing the viewer to make a lot of their own conclusions from this commercial. If you don't already understand the PETA perspective on milk, I bet you'll think this commercial is crazy.

I'm not surprised by their use of shock value, PETA has done it before. I thought the spot was funny, as it pokes fun of our rediculous obsession with drinking milk in a unique and memorable way. Do people realize how cow's milk is only intended for baby cows? Why don't we drink human milk if we need milk so much? There are a ton of facts that prove cow's milk is not healthy for humans, if one does their homework to find out.

Posted by: snowhite_1982 on September 26th, 2006.

Mooooooooo

While the shock factor is high (gag), the point is missed - actually, I'm just assuming I know what the point is since it is PETA. If I just landed from Mars, I wouldn't know what they were trying to communicate. Or perhaps it would make PERFECT SENSE. Martians.

Someone help the CD in this one.

No strategy, 0 brand building, I like to protect animals, and now I want to eat a cow.
PETA please fire the ad agency today if you dont want people to believe that your are a crazy extremist organization.

Posted by: cubes on September 10th, 2006.

I'm dumbstruck

Okay, you got my attention.

But beyond that, I'm lost. And confused. And disturbed. Possibly scarred for life. What is this ad trying to say? What does PETA want me to do, stop drinking milk? Stop going to strip joints? Show Bossie the respect she deserves?

I've seen plenty of bad advertising in my day, but if there's a sequel to this, I may have to stick knitting needles in my eyes.

Posted by: camper on August 24th, 2006.

pointless

I suppose I can phrase my comment on this ad as, "it's about what I would expect from PETA".

Even if I detatch myself from my personal opinion about the usefulness of PETA, and try to analyze it as a piece of communication, I have to wonder: what's the point here, anyway...that milk comes from breasts and udders? Does that make milk somehow bad? Are they trying to tell us that drinking milk is exploitative of cows in the way that Girls Gone Wild is exploitative of drunk college girls? If so, I don't see the connection, so the message kind of falls flat on its face.
